Most often we get questions like – ‘Why do we need to go for acting class in an Acting School ? What are the fees structure and course duration in an Acting School? Do we get placement after learning the course through the Acting School ? Can this help me in my career forever?’
In this article, we will tell you why acting training through an Acting School is needed for you who aspire to be an actor. Acting is an easy thing for you to do in daily normal life in general speaking. But when it comes to a profession, acting is not as easy as you think it is. It requires a lot of concentration, hard work and being dedicated and have the skills to perform all in all.
Acting is all about an actor or actress who adopts the character of any story and enacted it in an activity. Acting is when an individual takes on the role of another person, the behavior, and attitudes, in a scripted environment like in a play or film. It can be in theatre, television, film, radio, or any other medium. A professional actor’s goal is to portray another individual as honestly and authentically as possible.
Acting is not a spoon-feeding career
A broad range of skills is involved in acting, including a well-developed imagination, emotional facility, physical expressivity, vocal projection, clarity of speech, and the ability to interpret drama. The vast majority of professional actors have undergone extensive training. Most Actors and actresses often have many instructors for a full range of training involving singing, scene-work, audition techniques, and acting for the camera.
An actor should know the art of acting in portraying many fictional characters on stage and in front of the camera. It is what most people believe that actors must be mentally and emotionally ready to enter the body of another person. The actor must be mentally prepared because it is quite challenging to enter into the skin of another person. Rehearsal is very important. The actor is controlling, constructing, consciously and unconsciously manipulating the character to behave in certain ways based upon all of his research, training, preparation, etc.
Should You Become an Actor or Actress?
As a career, Acting involves more than just performing in movies. The working actors perform in multiple jobs. It can be anywhere as in live theater productions, in commercials, at theme parks, and on television shows. Actors work in multiples so as to support themselves financially.
Travel is an unavoidable circumstance. It has become quite often necessary, and competition for acting positions is extremely high. Acting can be a tiring career, both physically and emotionally. So unless you decided to fully be dedicated, you can never be a successful one. You must know that actors often spend hours at a time at repetitive auditions and rehearsals. And being rejected is nothing new especially for new actors starting their careers.
Of course, there are no formal education requirements for the one who wants to become an actor. Yet, a bachelor’s degree in theater arts, drama, acting and performing, may be helpful in learning technical skills. In acting career, the experience is of great importance. The experience only can lead you to bigger and higher paying roles. Various skills an actor must have and include are the creativity, communication skills, literacy and reading skills, memorization, physical stamina, persistence, discipline, dedication, and ability to communicate with a wide variety of people.
Steps You need to Become an Actor
The path to becoming an actor may vary. But here are three steps that you can take to become an actor.
1: Take Classes
2: Gain Professional Experience
3: Acquire Additional Skills
Experience is often vital to becoming successful in an acting career. Many actors start gaining experience in high school or community plays. In addition to the experience gained through a formal degree program, you may consider taking small paid or unpaid parts or working as a model. Experience may be gained through work at theme parks, dinner theatres, or on cruise ships.
Types of acting schools in Mumbai
There are 10 types of acting schools and you must know. These are the following
1. Acting Technique Class:
This is the first one you should take. These are the common acting class taken by many actors. So, if you are not going to a drama school then take this class. In the world of acting schools, this is the type of class that enables an actor to see where he stands and what is his foundation. This class, however, is different from one school to the other as it all also depends on the type of teacher and the approach they take.
A good acting teacher will know your caliber and see what else he need to teach you. He can help you enhance your skills to the maximum. The skills you learn here is what matters the most because it can differentiate you from someone who doesn’t know how to act. In an acting technique class, you will learn all the basics of acting by using a specific method.
2. On-Camera Class:
The thing which most of you fail in acting is because of camera consciousness. This class will help you in performing well in front of a camera. When you lack the ability to take control of your acting just because you are camera conscious. Then no matter how much training you have in your drama school, chances are, you are still not gaining any on-screen techniques from real filmmakers.
To be excellent in your craft, you must remember that you need to extend your horizons. Open yourself to new acting opportunities in order to get the most of your career.
The moment you take on-camera lessons, you will be taught on-camera acting. Techniques on how to improve your voice, how to take advantage of the props, were to get in, stand and go, are just a number of the techniques that will be learned in this class.
An actor who went through an on-camera acting class is always more likely to get credits from a professional director.
3. Audition Acting Class:
This is the class where you learn how to give auditions. It is always a better idea to include the course of audition class in your training. This will enhance and help you to be more aware of how to perform and not get rejection constantly. Auditioning is actually more difficult than the performance itself.
Auditioning classes teach actors how to break down a script, what to do during an audition and how to get approval from the whole casting panel.
4. Sight Reading Class:
Here you will learn how to quickly prepare especially when you run out of time. This class will help you quickly prepare the text: how to read it, break it down and analyze it, memorize your lines and deliver them. This class is particularly useful for actors going out on a lot of commercials, as those types of auditions usually give you much less time to prepare, but the class is good for any aspiring actor in general.
There are many golden rules to cold reading. Such sight reading class will teach you how to get to the main part of the scene, what are the right questions to ask, how to understand your character, your obstacles, etc. You will learn to accomplish all these basic things very fast so that you have more time to think about your actual performance rather than figuring out what the text is about.
5. Improvisation Class:
Just like the title suggests, this class will help you improve a lot of things in various ways. It is all about improving your skills and ability. Improve class is not required for actors auditioning for film, TV, and theatre. But they’re a must almost for actors pursuing auditions for commercials. This is because improv is not only about comedy timing and being funny; it’s also about getting out of your head and being able to think on your feet, fast.
Commercial auditions will often ask you to improvise. In fact, every commercial auditioning you’re going into, you can safely assume that some improvisation will be required, which is why most acting schools with Commercial Acting Training classes either already have improv in them, or have a separate class that’s recommended for actors to take.
6. Commercial Acting School / Classes :
This is quite different from improvisation class. This is the best and essential class for actors who are pursuing acting jobs in commercials. Ideally, you should have both – improv and commercial class training on your resume. However, if you were to pick just one, it should always be improvisation class.
Everything about commercials you will learn in commercial classes. It will guide you from auditioning to reading scripts, to improvising, to behaving on a commercial shoot, and so forth. Note that commercial acting is not the same as acting for film, theatre or TV. It is altogether a different thing which is why you should never put commercials on your acting resume.
7. Vocal Class in an Acting School :
As much as acting is necessary, so is the voice command. You must learn how to control your voice and make it audible with enough clarity. Casting directors and agents will be interested in your vocal as much as your acting performance.
Vocal classes will teach actors how to use their voice to the best of its ability, how to breath properly, how to control it; there will also be singing lessons. This class lesson will make you aware of your vocal abilities. Not to forget, this is a great skill to have regardless of which acting path you’re taking.
If you have the money and the time, it’s always a good idea to take vocal training classes, even if you’re not auditioning for any musical roles and focus on film or TV, for example. This is why British actors are considered much better than, say, Americans – most of them go through 3 years of voice classes as part of the drama school training.
8. Body and Movement Class:
This class will teach you how to control every limb of your body movement. It is the exact same situation as it is with vocal classes whereby you take control of your voice. How vocal classes help you with your voice, body and movement classes will do to your body. You will explore the physicality of every part of your body that you are able to move.
For example, occasionally it can be something as simple as yoga. These classes can be extremely useful to an actor for an overall skill set and become a more well-rounded performer.
9. Classical Acting Class:
Just as you probably have suspected, these types of acting classes teach students of various historical and period acting techniques. They’re perfect to learn Shakespeare and how to do it right. They teach voice and movement techniques, reading Shakespeare and other classical literature, and how to perform it according to standards.
However, if this is your primary aim, training in drama school would be much more beneficial, as these classes are incomplete and usually not long enough to learn anything substantial. But again, if you have the time and money, and you’ve taken all other classes mentioned above, this may be something useful to explore to become a more well-rounded actor.
10. Voice Over Class in An Acting School:
Voice-over classes are totally different from the vocal classes. Voice-over acting career is a great path an actor can try when all the other options are slow to pick up, or if it’s something you’re passionate about. However, voice over acting is completely different from film/TV/stage acting and is normally considered as a different career.
Voiceover classes are only necessary for actors who want to specialize in voice-overs. Voice over acting class will teach you all the technical skills you need to have to become a voice-over actor, and there is a lot to learn. Many actors falsely assume that voice over acting is easy and there’s not much to know, but the opposite is true. So if that’s the career you’re after, voice over classes should be first on your list.
